A member of our book group expressed frustration that she is not prepared to discuss a book until after we have met and discussed it. Sometimes I feel the same. Sometimes I want to ask a question before we meet, a question I want other to consider so I can hear your responses.
So in a spirit of sharing, to provide a forum for discussion, and a site to remind us of when we are meeting and what we will be reading in the near future, I have started this blog. We can share thoughts about what we are reading together, and what we are reading individually, and one and all can participate. Anyone game to join me?
I have been thinking about A Town Like Alice. I have been wondering what I would do with my money should I come into a fortune that would mean I would never have to work again. Here is my list:
Hire a live-in maid so my house would always be clean.
Contribute to the Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City.
Build a medical clinic in a rural village in China or Mongolia and fund it with medical staff and equipment.
That isn't much of a list. How about you?
And would you be willing to travel half-way across the world for a man? Any man? Which man?

Let the reading begin . . . or continue

A not uncommon thought of mine is what I'd do with the big bucks and it depends on how big, of course. I would love to build my mom a house which would require buying some property. I also used to fantasize about some charitable stuff I'd like to do. I really liked the idea of having a fancy restaurant in a poor area where all the people who work there are paid very handsomely and the food is sold very cheaply. Or a decent apartment complex in a slum where the rent is affordable and lots of people are hired to do lots of stuff and paid real well--or adopt every unwanted child, including special needs.
ReplyDeleteI now am too lazy to even consider those options and would just contribute to charities who do good things. I love the micro loans things and the educational fund. They'd probably get most of my spare big bucks.
I would for sure hire a tutor for Emily, basically a private school just for her really.
I would also build a house, smaller than this one, ranch style and tell Jim he can join me or not.
About Bookseller. I loved the first first part and then read the second wife thing and am having a hard time getting over that. The women as property thing is why I can never make it through the Iliad. But I am forging on.
I don't know if anyone has started Stones for Ibarra yet. I am re-reading it and enjoying it more than the first time even. It's a lovely little book that I was fairly certain none of you, even Katherine, would have read. I am also reading Abraham Divided--very interesting. I am also having second thoughts about doing the Koran. I am so bad at decisions. HELP!!!!
XOXO (And you do all know that XOXO stand for hugs and kisses),

I am posting this just so it won't say "1 comments." It can now say "2 comments" and that won't bug me.
ReplyDeleteI am past the problem I had with the second wife thing because I now see this is a huge point of the book. It is not quite a story like I had thought it was going to be but almost a history book and so interesting. I have a question, Wordies, are people of different nationalities deep down different? Are we born American vs Afghani because we are or are we different because we're born American vs Afghani. And is Afghani the correct designation and does this spell check? checccccck Yup, it's underlined.
